Cracks Present in Uninspected Southwest Planes, Official Says

A Federal Aviation Administration official told lawmakers Thursday that cracks had been found in a number of Southwest Airlines planes that were grounded last month after it was revealed that they had missed inspection. However, FAA associate administrator Nicholas A. Sabatini insisted that 99 percent of planes achieved safety compliance. During testimony, members of the Senate Commerce aviation subcommittee criticized the FAA's failure to enforce compliance rules, calling it an economic catastrophe and an embarrassment to the nation.  Matthew L.
